Steiner describes the survivors of Atlantis migrating to start the ancient civilizations of Egypt and India.
But also how do such stories as Jack and the Beanstalk represent narratives passed down through thousands of generations and recount realities of past times, yet clothed in images referring to realities of later times (in which we now live). Now given that they did already exist in those remote times, would Ahriman or Lucifer still hold a memory of those times? Does their being stretch through time...?
Note: the Atlantean and Post Atlantean epoch each in their totality represent about 15.000 years.
Along these topics, we will be tracking the core essence of Rudolf Steiner's spiritual history, and how grand mythic narratives drape ancient realities in modern imagery. As Steiner lays out, fairy tales, folklore point to past conditions of the earth and the transition between cosmic epochs.
🛶 The Great Migration: From Atlantis to Egypt and India
As the Atlantean continent faced its watery demise due to the corruption of etheric technologies, a highly advanced spiritual leader known in Anthroposophy as Manu (the Great Leader of the Sun Oracle) gathered a small, spiritually healthy remnant of humanity. [1]
Manu led this group on a massive migration from the West toward the East, moving through Europe into Central Asia. From this central evolutionary "seed," great initiates were sent out to establish the new Post-Atlantean cultural epochs: [1, 2, 3]
- Ancient India (The First Epoch): The first group settled in India. Because their souls still carried the immediate, fresh memory of the sublime spiritual heights of Atlantis, they looked at the newly hardened, dense physical world and felt a deep homesickness. They termed the physical world Maya (illusion) because their fading clairvoyance told them true reality lay in the spirit. [1, 2]
- Ancient Egypt (The Third Epoch): Earlier on, another wave had already founded settlements which were to become the Egypto-Chaldean culture. While India looked entirely upward to the spirit, the Egyptians used the remnants of Atlantean wisdom to master physical matter. They remembered how to manipulate gravity and the etheric forces of nature—which they externalized into their architecture, geometry, and the alignment of the pyramids. [1, 2, 3]
🌱 Fairy Tales: Ancient Realities Clothed in Later Images
The case of such a tale as that of Jack and the Beanstalk perfectly mirrors Steiner's teachings on folklore. Steiner taught that genuine folk stories are not fabrications; they are the clairvoyant memories of ancient humanity, preserved by the collective folk-soul and passed down through thousands of generations.
When these memories were originally formed (in Lemuria or Atlantis), humans didn't think in abstract concepts—they perceived everything as living, spiritual pictures. As humanity lost its clairvoyance and entered the dense, intellectual Post-Atlantean era, these grand cosmic events had to be "clothed" in everyday physical images so the modern mind could grasp them: [1]
- The Beanstalk: This represents the etheric life-force and the vertical axis of cosmic connection. In Lemurian and early Atlantean times, the link between the earthly human and the spiritual-etheric world was wide open. The plant world was dynamic, and human life-force (Vril) was directly tied to the vital growth-forces of vegetation.
- Climbing to the Clouds: Jack climbing the beanstalk is a memory of the ancient soul leaving the physical body to ascend into the dense, watery, cloud-like atmosphere of Atlantis to commune with higher spheres.
- The Giant in the Castle: The giant is a literal historical memory. Humans in Atlantis were giants because gravity was weaker and physical matter had not yet contracted into dense, small skeletons.
- The Magic Harp and Golden Eggs: These represent the lost spiritual faculties—the magical power of vowels/syllables (the Harp) and the direct mastery over life-generation and etheric energy (the Golden Egg).
- Cutting it Down: Jack chopping down the beanstalk represents the final closure of the old clairvoyant connection. The beanstalk dies, the giant falls, and humanity is left strictly on the solid, isolated earth to develop modern individual intellect.
👁️ Do Lucifer and Ahriman Remember?
Yes, they absolutely do. Their beings entirely stretch through time, and their memory of these epochs is flawless and continuous.
In Steiner’s cosmology, Lucifer and Ahriman are not human; they are cosmic, adversarial beings belonging to higher spiritual hierarchies (Angelic and Archangelic ranks) who "lagged behind" in their own evolution during planetary stages long before the Earth even existed. [1, 2]
Because they operate outside the tight, linear constraints of a physical human brain, time and memory function completely differently for them:
- Lucifer’s Memory: Lucifer was highly active during the Lemurian epoch. He is the "Serpent" who injected intense passion, astral desire, and premature ego-consciousness into human beings. Lucifer remembers the Earth when it was fluid, fiery, and beautifully spiritual. He wants to use that memory to tempt humans into escaping their heavy, physical bodies and returning to a dream-like, blissful spiritual illusion. [1, 2]
- Ahriman’s Memory: Ahriman became deeply powerful as the Earth hardened into the Post-Atlantean era. Ahriman remembers exactly how the cosmic laws of gravity, contraction, and mineral density were formed. He is the master of the rigid, material, and mechanical world. His goal is to use his total mastery of physical laws to convince humanity that the physical universe is a giant, dead machine and that the soul does not exist. [1, 2, 3]
Both beings carry the absolute blueprint of Earth’s deep past, using their ancient knowledge to tug human evolution toward their respective extremes—Lucifer pulling us up into formless fantasy, and Ahriman crushing us down into cold, dead materialism. [1, 2]
Next we will look at how some aspects is still present in folklore and mythical creatures.
