In anthroposophical medicine, founded by Rudolf Steiner, the human being is understood through the Threefold Physiological Organization. Health is not a static state, but a dynamic, breathing balance between two polar opposites, Health is not a static state, but a dynamic, breathing balance between two polar opposites, moderated by a rhythmic middle.
-->The Threefold System and Inflammation
Inflammation is viewed as a displaced process. It occurs when the forces of one pole illegally invade the territory of the other.
1. The Nerve-Sense Pole (Head and Nervous System)
* Characteristics:
Cold, hardening, mineralising, and centripetal (moving inward).
* Spiritual Connection:
It is the primary seat of the Ego and the awake consciousness. To allow clear, objective thinking, life forces (the Etheric body) must be withdrawn from this system. Therefore, the head is a place of continuous, slow "dying."
* Relation to Inflammation:
The nerve-sense forces are anti-inflammatory. They represent form, boundary, and cool consciousness.
* Characteristics:
Warm, dissolving, regenerating, and centrifugal (moving outward).
* Spiritual Connection:
It is the seat of the Astral body (desires, instincts) and is deeply unconscious. It is dominated by pure life energy and metabolic fire.
* Relation to Inflammation:
This pole is inherently inflammatory. Inflammation is nothing other than the healthy, chaotic "burning" warmth of the metabolic system escaping its abdominal boundaries and entering other tissues.
3. Inflammation as a Polar Conflict
* Acute Inflammation:
When the metabolic warmth-forces overpower the cooling nerve-sense forces in a tissue, acute inflammation erupts. The body is trying to dissolve a localized hardening to regenerate itself.
* Chronic Inflammation:
If the nerve-sense forces are weak or brittle (often due to an exhausted Einstellung or cold, abstract thinking), they fail to contain and sculpt the metabolic fire.
* Pressure or inflammation in the head:
These represents an illegal invasion of the metabolic "warmth and fluid" process into the cool, mineralised sanctuary of the nerve-sense system. The head is being asked to digest or burn something it shouldn't.
