The lecture cycle The Gospel of St. Matthew (GA 123) consists of twelve lectures given by Rudolf Steiner in Bern, Switzerland, from September 1 to 12, 1910.
In this cycle (particularly in Lectures VII through X), Steiner links the eight practices directly to the development of the chakra system and breaks down how Christ’s Sermon on the Mount fulfills and transforms these ancient disciplines through the Beatitudes.
1. How Steiner Links the Eight Exercises to the Lotus Flowers
Steiner explains that chakras (or lotus flowers) are organ-like centers of subtle perception. The 16-petaled lotus flower located near the throat/larynx is responsible for dynamic, spiritual hearing and perception of the higher intentions of other beings.
- Ancient Evolution (8 Petals Already Motionless): In ancient humanity, eight of these sixteen petals were developed semi-consciously through natural clairvoyance and inherited spiritual faculties. Over historical epochs, these eight became inactive or "frozen" as humanity descended further into physical physical-brain consciousness.
- Modern Development (8 Petals to Consciously Unfold): The remaining eight petals must now be developed through conscious, self-directed moral effort.
- The Mechanism: Each of the eight daily exercises corresponds to the rotation and activation of one of these eight new petals. When an individual practices Right Thinking, Right Decision, Right Speech, etc., it sends regular, harmonious etheric currents into the throat organ.
- Ignition of the Whole Organ: Once the human ego consciously sets these eight modern petals in motion through self-discipline, their rhythmic movement reacts upon the older eight petals, bringing the entire 16-petaled organ back to life in a fully conscious, controlled state.
2. Steiner's Breakdown of the Beatitudes in GA 123
In Lecture IX and X of GA 123, Steiner turns to the Sermon on the Mount, explaining that the Beatitudes represent the nine-fold structure of human nature being progressively filled with the Christ Impulse.
Before Christ, human spiritual experiences required entering a trance or going out of the body in Mystery sanctuaries. Christ brought the "Kingdom of Heaven" into the physical vehicle, allowing the Ego (I AM) to illuminate each component layer of human constitutional nature from within.
Steiner traces the Beatitudes line-by-line across the human constitution:
| # | Beatitude (Sermon on the Mount) | Constitutional Member Transformed | Steiner's Esoteric Explanation |
| 1 | "Blessed are the poor in spirit..." | Physical Body / Ego-Perception | Those who feel "poor in spirit" in their physical brain-bound state realize they need the higher spirit to fill them from within. |
| 2 | "Blessed are they that mourn..." | Etheric Body (Life Forces) | Those who suffer pain in the life-body find that inner sorrow deepens the soul and awakens higher etheric comfort. |
| 3 | "Blessed are the meek..." | Astral Body (Sentient Soul) | The gentleness of the astral body tames raw passions, enabling the soul to inherit and master the "earth" of its own emotional nature. |
| 4 | "Blessed are they which hunger and thirst after righteousness..." | Mind / Intellectual Soul | The feeling of logical truth and justice becoming an intense, living inner hunger within the thinking soul. |
| 5 | "Blessed are the merciful..." | Consciousness Soul | The Ego acting directly out of warmth and compassion in daily choices, reflecting mercy into the external world. |
| 6 | "Blessed are the pure in heart..." | Manas (Spirit Self) | Purification of the heart allows the spiritual light of the Higher Self to be perceived directly ("they shall see God"). |
| 7 | "Blessed are the peacemakers..." | Buddhi (Life Spirit) | The ability to harmonize external conflicts because inner spiritual harmony radiates out into humanity ("children of God"). |
| 8 | "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake..." | Atman (Spirit Man) | Standing so firmly in spiritual truth that external persecution cannot shake the higher divine core within. |
| 9 | "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you..." | The Indwelling Christ Impulse | The ninth Beatitude addresses those who bear the Christ-force personally, enduring outer rejection while holding the living presence of the Word. |
Synthesis: The Path of Inward Realization
In Steiner's view, the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path prepared the external soul faculties by organizing human action, thought, and speech.
When Christ entered human history, these same eight steps were elevated from an external rule of discipline into an interior spiritual capacity—enabling the individual human Ego to transform its entire physical, etheric, and astral organization into a vessel for the divine.
