Bipolarity as a Structural Disturbance
Instead, it is a structural disturbance in how the higher bodies incarnate into, and release from, the physical instruments of the body, in relation to the 'I'.

When illuminating a complex medical term like bipolar disorder (historically known as manic-depression), anthroposophical spiritual science shifts the focus away from symptoms. It evaluates how the human spiritual core (the Ego or "I") interfaces with its lower vehicles: the Astral body (emotions), the Etheric body (life forces), and the Physical organism.
From an anthroposophical perspective, bipolarity is not an illness of the spirit itself—the human spirit cannot be sick. Instead, it is a structural disturbance in how the higher bodies incarnate into, and release from, the physical instruments of the body, in relation to the 'I'.
In a healthy individual, the Ego and Astral body maintain a balanced rhythm with the physical and etheric bodies during waking hours. In a person experiencing bipolar tendencies, this elasticity is disrupted, creating two extreme states of relating to the physical organism.

[ Physical / Etheric Body / Organs ]
During a manic phase, the Ego and the Astral body lift too far out of the physical-etheric substrate. They detach from the stabilizing, grounding boundaries of the physical organs.
Because the astral forces are floating loosely in the upper, cosmic spheres, the person experiences a flood of unbuffered spiritual light, ideas, grandiosity, and intense psychic energy. The normal limitations of gravity, fatigue, and time disappear.
The spirit is treating the body like an external vehicle rather than an anchor. Because the conscious "I" is not deeply bound inside the brain and nervous system, its critical thinking, judgment, and earthly boundaries fail.
Eventually, the loose cosmic flight burns out, and the higher bodies collapse back downward. Instead of gently nesting into the physical body, the Ego and Astral body plunge too deeply and become rigidly jammed or trapped within the heavy, cold, mineralized processes of the physical organs.
The person becomes hyper-aware of the density of earthly existence. They experience the physical body as an unmovable lead weight. Thoughts freeze, emotions turn into dark apathy, and the life-giving flow of the etheric body is choked by the heavy physical structure.
The light of the cosmos is entirely shut out. The person is swallowed by the cold, material density of the earthly plane, losing all memory of their true spiritual origin. The Underlying Organ Dynamics Anthroposophical medicine (developed by Steiner and Dr. Ita Wegman) links these psychological swings directly to the internal organs. The organs are the physical anchors for our soul forces.
The liver is the center of the living, fluidic etheric forces (the will to live and grow). The kidneys are highly sensitive to the astral air-and-light forces. Bipolarity often involves an inability of the kidney-astral system to properly harmonize and meet the fluidic liver-etheric system, leading to violent swings between dry, cold intellect/depression and overflowing, un-channeled vitality/mania.
Steiner emphasized that you cannot cure this condition by simply trying to suppress the mania or artificially lift the depression through cold, material force alone. The goal is to educate and strengthen the Ego so it can act as a conscious helmsman, maintaining the right elastic relationship between the spiritual heights and the earthly depths.
Establishing certain, predictable daily rhythms (sleep, meals, waking times) to help force the astral body into a healthy, rhythmic breathing pattern with the earth.
Moving the body to specific geometric and spiritual gestures (Curative Eurythmy) helps guide the loose astral body back into correct alignment with the physical limbs as well as with the etheric body.
Using structured natural substances—like Quartz (Silicea) to bring inner cosmic form and boundary to a chaotic astral body, or specific preparations of Iron (Mars forces) to give the Ego the centering courage to incarnate properly into the blood.
By bringing this type of spiritual-scientific awareness to mental health, doesn't mean denying the physical realities of the condition. Rather, it is a way of "illuminating" the question—showing that what modern psychiatry labels as a chemical defect is actually a profound, dramatic struggle of the human soul trying to find its dynamic balance between the cosmos and the earth.
