The earth is a great cauldron, boiling at its center—pushing and thrusting up bubbles of life that rise, hang for a moment in the air, then burst in a rainbow fall. Names are distractions. The red bubbles on the green bubbles are rising, stretching and growing toward the golden globe that draws all life from the heated center.

My heart beats with the same rhythm as the earth’s boiling; my eyes are like tiny sun globes, fired with its light, reflecting its forms into my mind. The wind blows across the mountain, searching out the hidden places, lifting and carrying the bubbles across rocks and dirt and sky. There are no names here, or else I do not know them. Life force is above, inside, and below. I am one, yet I am not myself at all. I see the colors, watch the fall light dance, and see the leaves swirl.

I am, after all, only sitting in the backyard, wondering to myself whether it is true that if I leave the earth in my imagination, I do, in fact, leave it in a true way. A sip of coffee. An idea that I can fly, that the world is not at all what we were told it is, takes hold of me, lifting me higher and higher into a place where words no longer convey meaning.

Perhaps it was this way on the day of the first light, when we saw only the outlines of form but had yet to find the solid words for what was there. The words, in a sense, give form. If we can name a thing, we can essentially tame it, make it, in a sense, our own. I am not sure I want to name my fancies. I am not sure I want them to have a form, to become more solid. I think, in the end, I would rather watch my own imaginings and see what happens.

Maybe they are just the tired ends of long days or too-early mornings. Maybe they are doorways to other realms. I will wait and see.
