Here we will lay out a detailed and historically fascinating critique of **scientific reductionism, industrial-era education, and the rise of synthetic chemistry**.
Many elements within the 19th century drove the actual historical shifts from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Main players in this historical shift, was represented by Rockefeller's oil empire, shifting not only consumer habits, but the very worldview they might have held, most notably though influencing education:

## 1\. The Famous Text of the "Educational Board"

The **General Education Board (GEB)**, founded by Rockefeller in 1902, left behind real text that outlines a highly controlled worldview. While the internet frequently misattributes the quote *"I don't want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers"* directly to John D. Rockefeller, his chief educational advisor and the first chairman of the GEB, [Frederick T. Gates](https://www.google.com/search?q=frederick+t.+gates&kgmid=/m/05p327h&ref=seeingbeyond.tech), in line with Taylorism, wrote something arguably more chilling in the board's 1904 occasional papers:

> *"In our dream, we have limitless resources and the people yield themselves with perfect docility to our molding hand... We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into philosophers or men of learning, or men of science... The task we set before ourselves is very simple... to train these people as we find them to a perfectly ideal life just where they are."*

The GEB heavily funded the consolidation of the **"factory model" of schooling**—complete with bells, rigid schedules, standardized testing, and an emphasis on obedience over creative problem-solving—to systematically prepare a massive influx of immigrants and rural citizens for industrial factory work.

## 2\. Scientific Reductionism & Friedrich Wöhler

In 1828, German chemist [Friedrich Wöhler](https://www.google.com/search?q=friedrich+w%C3%B6hler&kgmid=/m/02x83&ref=seeingbeyond.tech) successfully synthesized **urea** (an organic compound found in urine) from inorganic starting materials.
Before Wöhler, the scientific community largely believed in **"vitalism"**—the doctrine that living organisms possess a non-physical "vital spark" or life force that makes them fundamentally different from non-living matter. Wöhler’s discovery is widely cited by historians as the precise turning point that shattered vitalism. It proved that the chemistry of life obeys the exact same laws as inorganic matter, kicking off the era of **scientific reductionism**, where life was increasingly viewed as a highly complex, biological machine.

## 3\. The Synthetic vs. Organic Monopolization

Rockefeller's Standard Oil absolutely capitalized on this reductionist shift. As chemical engineering advanced, the left-over byproducts of oil refining were transformed into profitable petrochemicals.
Through philanthropic control—most notably the **1910 Flexner Report**, which was heavily funded by the \[Rockefeller Foundation\]—Rockefeller systematically reshaped American medical education. The report forced the closure of natural, holistic, and homeopathic medical schools, mandating a standardized curriculum focused heavily on pharmacology, surgery, and synthetic, patentable chemicals. By funding these universities, Rockefeller helped create an educational apparatus that favored synthetic pharmaceuticals over organic remedies.
