Mohawk tribesman Brant McGregor recounted the story to Hammerson Peters. McGregor said: “Before the St. Lawrence \[Seaway\] was constructed, Kahnawake had direct access to the river from the north end of our territory. There were docks, wharfs, and beaches. There was a young boy, around ten years old, named Sa’ronkwa’sen. He used to love to go down and play by the river all by himself. He was told not to go near the river alone because it was dangerous. His mother warned him about the great maned, bearded, horned serpent that had been seen recently by some local fishermen. This only piqued his interest even more. Now more determined than ever to go to the river and get a glimpse of the creature, he set off by himself one sunny summer morning.” “When he arrived at the river, after a short walk, he noticed some other children throwing rocks into the water off in the distance. It seemed like a good idea, so he began to throw some small stones into the river. Suddenly, only a stone’s throw’s distance from where Sa’ronkwa’sen was standing, the water began to violently bubble and churn. Then out of the froth emerged a huge maned serpent with a beard and horns. Sa’ronkwa’sen was terror-struck. He could not move a muscle. There he stood, frozen, as the monster slowly approached him. It came within an arm’s length of the poor boy. It glared at him with its huge eyes, unblinking." “Slowly, Sa’ronkwa’sen began to wade into the water towards the giant serpent. He had become hypnotized by the gaze of the beast. He swam up to the creature, which turned its great back to the boy. The boy quickly mounted it, climbing up the great brown mane that ran along the back of the creature’s head and twisting his hands into the creature’s hair to get a grip on the beast. At once, the great serpent dove under the water and swam along the surface in an undulating manner. Every time its great head broke the surface, Sa’ronkwa’sen, its passenger, became visible, tightly grasping the monster’s head and neck with his arms and legs.” The boy never returned to the village. Many years after the boy was reputed to have disappeared along with the monster, Mr. McGregor reported sighting the beast himself near Montreal. Sightings of giant serpent-like beings in and around the area go back at least 200 years. According to a website devoted to recording sightings and legends regarding a water serpent affectionately dubbed Memphré, the creature is sighted frequently on nearby Lake Memphrémagog. “I have found many old documents relating to sightings,” the site founder wrote. “One of the first sightings, which dates back to January 21, 1847, came from *The Stanstead Journal.* Here is an extract: ‘I am not aware whether it is generally known that a strange animal, something of a sea serpent....exists in Lake Memphremagog…’ I have also found, on the same subject, articles written in 1850, 1853, 1855, 1866, 1877, 1879, 1892, etc.... In 1982, a writer from France, Michel Meurger, wrote a book entitled *Les Monstres des Lacs du Québec*. It was later translated into English as Lake Monster Traditions.” Although this monster has never been proven to exist by the standards of science, it is remarkable that so many different sightings have been recorded over such a long period of time. Reports of water serpents span the ages and exist in many cultures across the planet. It seems unlikely that such a being could be so well documented in so many places and by so many people without at least some trace of truth to the story. Maybe when we are looking for evidence of these giant water dwellers, we are often looking in the wrong places. Perhaps an esoteric understanding, one that includes the acceptance of different worlds that occasionally intersect, is needed here. Do water serpents and other mythical beings with long histories recorded around them actually lie along doorways or portals to this realm, places where imagination and physical reality are not always readily distinguished? Is a water serpent something that is caught between our reality and the spiritual realms? Stories of ghosts and otherworldly beings might stem from entities of this sort that, for one reason or another, could not fully cross over to the next stage of being. Could the sightings of giant serpents be such a case? In that case, they may truly be seen by some and unable to be seen by others. Those who see them may have a certain connection to the spirit realms that makes the sighting possible. Perhaps the line between our world and other worlds around us is not as clear-cut and uncrossable as it may seem.
