Frodo and Sam solved the problem of the Ring of Power by throwing it into the abyss at Mount Doom. Unfortunately, we do not have such a mountain nearby, and the problems involving the AI takeover of basically everything loom ahead.

Tech oligarchs speak about a virtual utopia, the Internet of Things, where, some say, by 2030, AI and its power brokers will run everything from your fridge to your brain, while we commoners down below will “own nothing and be happy.” Statistically, people on both the left and the right agree on at least one thing: they do not want the data centers necessary to fuel the expansion of AI. They do not want a technological takeover of human existence. We will not be happy.

As the political season heats up, the current version of the War of the Ring is at an inflection point as well. AI is the ring, and whoever comes to hold it in their hand will “in the darkness bind” their political adversaries forever. None of this is good news for humanity. As long as any group wields the ring for its own advantage, the planet itself could eventually fall into the darkness of total authoritarian control. It might be difficult, if not impossible, for a free humanity to ever reemerge from such a condition.

That said, it seems equally impossible for AI to be destroyed altogether. Our world is a complex puzzle of interlocking pieces that requires technology to keep things running. The production of even simple parts often involves the combined efforts of multiple countries to produce a functioning end product.

AI already helps run the show. The intricacies of trade, medicine, food production, and more are tied to AI as an integral part of development. Cut the line, and the world could fall into chaos. Mount Doom is not really a viable option.

So what is the path forward for the human race, which needs and desires both the aid of technological development and the freedom to speak and live as we individually choose? The politicians are arguing over it. We need more freedom for corporations to develop the technology. We need more government control. Neither of these paths prevents the technology from being wielded against us, either by its own momentum or by the intentions of its programmers.

We can argue over which faction or political entity should administer AI, but something more fundamental is required. Unless we are willing to explore further the true needs and purpose of the human being, AI will present an existential danger to us all. It’s a long race to discover not how to empower AI before our rivals do, but how to empower the human bein–the inner being in all of us who is here on the planet not to be ruled by a computer, but for the divine purpose of spiritual growth.
