What indeed does the word "liminal" infer..?

The word **liminal** refers to a state of being **on the threshold** or caught between two different worlds, states, or conditions. It comes from the Latin word *limen*, which literally means "threshold" or doorway.
When something is described as liminal, it infers that it is **in-between, transitional, or neither here nor there.**

In the context the deep spiritual and esoteric philosophy we are seeking to explore here, "liminal" infers a few specific things:

## 1\. The Twilight Zone of Consciousness

A liminal state is the boundary where two distinct realms meet. For example:

- The transition between **waking life and sleep** (the hypnagogic state).
- The space where the **physical world and the spirit world** overlap.
- In a liminal space, the rigid laws of our normal reality begin to soften, making it the exact zone where *conjuring*, *invocation*, or entity contact takes place.

## 2\. A State of Transition (The "In-Between")

It infers a period or space of transformation where you have left one room but have not yet fully entered the next. It is a state of suspension. In rituals or ancient mystery schools, the "liminal phase" is the middle of an initiation—the old self has died, but the new self has not yet been born.

## 3\. Ambiguity and Lack of Control

Because a liminal space lacks fixed rules, it is inherently ambiguous and often unsettling. It is a boundary zone. Referring to a previous article about boundaries and control, **the liminal zone is where human control is at its weakest**, because one has stepped off solid ground but has not yet anchored oneself to a higher world.

## Integrating it with your previous text

If one were to bring this word into the context of discerning the nether-worlds and higher worlds, it fits as a word description the boundary itself:

> *"Conjuring is none other than calling in beings of the nether-worlds, but invocation can also potentially call in beings of higher worlds. In both cases, one must cross a *liminal* threshold—a boundary where human control is highly vulnerable."*

The idea of a **liminal** threshold therefore accurately sums-up the notion of "boundary" which can be visualized between these worlds.
