Steiner provided specific exercises to awaken spiritual perception.
These exercises are well-known, but are often not well understood.
They are extremely simple in fact, so simple the actual awakening is missed-out on.

One such exercise consist in perceiving the forces and beings involved in germination and growth, as well as perceiving their counterpart, the forces and beings involved in decaying.
This exercise is foundational, because it provides the basis for all spiritual perception.
It is part of the A, B, C of the clairvoyance toolkit if you will.

Here is how it goes:
Take for instance a piece of decaying wood, from a forest or so.
Eventually take it home. There, place it on a table, and next to it place a potted plant.
Then focus on the one, and then the other. Now here is the difficult part, because it is so simple.
Look at one, then the other, perhaps a few times back and forth, and look at the sensation each provokes.
**This sensation IS the spiritual perception.!**

It only needs to be intensified, but this can happen over time, by repeating this exercise over days.
Usually we don't give much attention to such a sensation, yet the sensation is the spiritual perception, but dampened at first.

In fact, we are clairvoyant, but we only don't know it. We look for something else, and don't realize it is right there.
We miss out on it, because the inner life is not cultivated.
We live constantly in the spiritual realm, with our inner world, but don't notice it.
So there is no need to reach for a spiritual world; the spiritual world is already there. It just needs to be looked at.
This involves the believe that the inner world is a real world, and not an illusion, as we've been made to believe.
And we've been protected from seeing it, until we reach the maturity to start seeing it.
Because we can fall prey to the misuse of it, a spiritual responsibility, and moral development needs to go along with it. This is part of the beauty of it, since it ennobles the soul, and creates a more worthwhile human being.

We constantly have sensations, feelings, emotions, thoughts, images; these are all spiritual perceptions.
We don't need to analyze what they *mean*; we only need to treat them as spiritual perceptions.
This means cultivating a relation to the spiritual realm.
This is what the spiritual world is waiting for, as well as your own soul. It enhances and heals the soul life, namely through this immediacy with the spiritual realm.

This is then a *knowing* of higher worlds..
This inner world IS higher, in that it is not a physical world.
It is a spiritual world.
It is the cultivation of the inner world, to which monks for instance devoted a whole life.
Not out of abnegation, but because this enriching of the inner world, through the monastic life, meant an experiencing of the divine within it, the beauty of which was more worth to them than anything else.

Today this enriching can happen in daily life, and in all its aspects, if this awareness of the reality of the inner world can be awakened, and cultivated.
Going to the groceries, being at work, in family, etc, the inner world can be enhanced, without getting lost in it. It is the right attitude which here counts. And finding this, is an exercise as well.
