It is related to *pais* (child), implying the nurturing of something into its highest potentiality. *Paideia* is the process by which humanity rescues itself from the raw state of *Physis*. When the Greeks engaged in *Paideia*, they were not just learning facts; they were sculpting the soul to reflect cosmic archetypes. *Paideia* is the human being realizing they do not belong to the animal kingdom, but to a spiritual order. It is the active creation of an interior and exterior "story world"—through art, philosophy, and myth—that shields us from the crude weight of raw nature. --- ## 2\. If the human soul remains projected outward through the physical senses, it sees only shadows (the "gardener" in Mary's first turn). To experience reality, the soul must execute a *metanoia*—it must pivot on its axis, pulling its forces of attention out of the sensory screen and directing them inward toward the light of the *Nous*. ## The Hermetic Dual Gesture In the Hermetic and Gnostic traditions, this turning is a rhythmic necessity for spiritual health. The soul exists on a threshold: 1. **The Outward Breath:** The soul projects itself into matter to create, to manifest iconography, and to till the earth (*Paideia* interacting with *Physis*). 2. **The Inward Breath (*Metanoia*):** The soul recognizes that it is becoming scattered and sickened by the material world. It executes a *metanoia*, "retreating" (*retrait*) into its own center to remember its divine origin. --- ## The Synthesis of Mary's Double Turning When we map these Greek terms onto the image of Mary Magdalene at the tomb, the deeper esoteric dimension becomes crystal clear: Mary’s first turn is a transition from the dead tomb of matter to the living world of *Physis*. She looks out and sees a gardener—a man of the soil, bound to the laws of nature. But this is not enough; she is still spiritually blind to the Resurrection. It is only when Christ calls her by her spiritual name that she undergoes **Metanoia**. She turns a second time. This is the *epistrophe* of Plato—the turning of the eye of the soul. She stops looking with her physical, sensory intellect (*Physis*) and awakens her higher spiritual organs hidden as it were behind the intellect (*Paideia* achieved). Through this inner pivot, the "gardener" of the physical world is "transfigured," namely seen as the Lord of the Cosmic Etheric world. She has successfully crossed the spiritual bridge from the outer world of nature into the living reality of the spirit.
