Once someone said to me that we are all just monkeys in a cage. Funny. We are not an experiment or a random collection of particles without meaning. We are spiritual beings. The only cage is in our own heads. To understand this, all we have to do is look up.

Spiritual scientist Rudolf Steiner put it this way:

“If we examined the structure of a person's brain clairvoyantly and could see that certain functions are located in certain places and give rise to certain processes, we would find that each person's brain is different. No two people have the same brain.

“If we could take a picture of the entire brain with all of its details visible, we would get a different picture for each person. If we photographed a person's brain at the moment of birth and took a picture of the sky directly above his or her birthplace, the two pictures would be alike. The stars in the photograph of the sky would be arranged in the same way as certain parts of the brain in the other picture. Thus, our brain is really a picture of the heavens, and we each have a different picture depending on where and when we were born. This indicates that we are born out of the entire universe.”

The stars go on forever, stretching out into darkness, piercing through it, lighting up the corridors of time and space. Here, we can learn. Space is not empty, as some would have us believe. It is alive. It is filled with angels, beings who stood at the beginning of creation, who called us forth from chaos and established order around us.

The angels did not simply create the world; they did so out of love. And the world, the universe itself, is imbued with this love. We can feel it in our own hearts. We can see it when we comprehend the beauty being created all around us. Love is not a random emotion resulting from a blind concentration of cells that somehow came alive in a dead universe. Love is alive, just as the stars and planets are alive, just as you and I are.

This is not something you learn from a textbook in school. The truth that love created the world can only be encountered when we look out into the world ourselves, carrying a question in our hearts: Do I have a purpose? Does the whole world of being in which I live have a purpose? When you ask these questions for yourself, the answer will come back to you.

There is a mirror in the sky, a language that speaks its mysteries to the soul through reflection. You are where you are, and I am where I am—each in our particular place on this particular planet—in order to be shown the truth about ourselves and God Himself.

Look up into the endless blue. Watch the restless clouds, the shimmering gold of the sunset. It is your own soul. Feel the cold starlight, the distant pulses from the deep center of creation. It is in you; it is in me. In the sky lies the truth about who we are and where we are going. It speaks love over us all.
