Is it possible to take a bad memory, for example, one that haunts us or causes difficulties, and turn it into something benign that no longer creates trouble? Does changing a memory change it for others who share it as well? It’s interesting, and it depends on what memory actually is.

What if memories are not dead, cut-off pieces of the past that exist as fragments in our own heads? What if memory is not stored in the brain alone, but is part of the collective consciousness and exists there on its own? What if it is more like a living being than a simple collection of information? That would change everything.

If you believe there are people who can see the past, the future, or communicate with others through the mind alone, then you already understand the elementary principle here: our thoughts do not come from ourselves alone. Thought is, in fact, a purely spiritual endeavor, and so is memory.

If you ask two people to describe an event they both witnessed, chances are good they will describe it in very different ways, sometimes to the point where it sounds as if they did not both see the same thing. There are different ways to see the same thing, and that is key to changing what we see in the past. It needs to be seen from another perspective.

This can mean observing the scene from the position of someone else, or even standing outside of it and watching it like a film. Before going to sleep, think of a scene from the past that troubles you. Imagine it from another perspective. Perhaps someone has done something wrong. Imagine it from the perspective of the wrongdoer. Allow yourself to enter into his emotions at the time. What drove him to do the wrong thing? Do it again right when you wake up, and see if the perspective of the other becomes stronger. Allowing the dark, wounded sides of others to be felt can bring change to our own perspective and allow true healing to take place.

To change a memory for myself is to slightly alter it for everyone–to change it, in fact, for the world itself. Changing a memory, however, does not wipe out what happened; it changes how I understand and feel about what happened. The realization that we are not the main character in the story, but only one of many characters who are all affected and changed by what happened, is the way to allow it to be. When we allow a memory to be, in return, it allows us, and perhaps many others, to be as well.
