If you live in a structure where there has been a lot of anger, conflict, grief, or pain, you might need to cleanse its atmosphere before it feels right, before it feels like “home.” From a spiritual perspective, places where intense emotional events have taken place may attract spiritual beings, and dark ones may linger where negative emotions have been concentrated. Spiritual housekeeping is sometimes necessary, particularly if you are moving into a new home or experiencing unexplained feelings of heaviness or other downward emotions that seem to correlate with the time you moved into your current home.

Having had my own experiences with these sorts of entities that can linger in a home, I made a list of spiritual “housekeeping tips” that I think are helpful in these situations. Feel free to add your own.

  1. Let in light and air. Light, in particular, helps cleanse a home. Allowing sunlight to stream in for as many hours as possible each day can change the atmosphere. The same goes for fresh air. Open windows and doors whenever possible and let the air circulate.
  2. Play music. Music is a spiritual medium. The right sounds, such as those of Bach, for example, can bring in good spiritual beings and help dark elementals become more positive or encourage them to leave the environment where such sounds are played.
  3. Guard your words and actions. Do not speak evil words or engage in angry arguments inside your home. Cursing, violent acts, and cruel words draw dark spirits toward a place and encourage them to settle in.
  4. Pray. Prayers such as the Lord’s Prayer, which has been repeated millions of times by people striving to live good and moral lives, have the power to invite good beings in and help them feel at home where you live. Repeat such prayers aloud.
  5. Keep things clean and orderly. Scrub dark corners and places where dirt tends to collect. These shadowy places can become hideouts for bad beings. Clean them up, throw away trash, and don't allow cobwebs or dark patches to grow and thrive in your home.
  6. Polish and brighten your surroundings. Polish furniture, glass, picture frames, and anything else that gives off a soft, warm glow when clean. This attracts spirits that enjoy a calm, happy, and well-cared-for environment. These beings may take up residence with you, increasing your own sense of calm and well-being.

These are just some of the things I have found helpful when moving into a new home, or even when simply rearranging things where I already live. I am sure there are many more. What is wonderful about this kind of spiritual housekeeping is that it not only helps you feel better in your home, but also makes it a place of comfort and refuge for others. Cleaning and caring for the place where you live can become a path of spiritual discovery. Once you begin to pay attention to what happens there, other doors open as well!

Steiner makes a radical point: the cosmic divine wisdom (the Higher Hierarchies) actually allows or incorporates these lagging beings into the universal plan.
